When an engine is rebuilt, the innards are oiled by hand as they are assembled back together so the motor has some lubrication on its first start whilst the oil pump takes a little while to reprime all the oilways, some of this oil finds its way in to the hot exhaust and burns off, making lots of smoke for a minute or so – hence a video of me making fun of an ecofriendly car belching out clouds of smoke! Engine was quite rattly whilst everything setled down and the oil found its way around properly, then it went silky smooth quiet as Prius engines do. Car is now running lovely, all it needed was new piston rings and a good clean up, the old rings were gummed in to the pistons and one was broken, the bearings on this 110000 mile engine were as good as new and were put back in, Prius engines live a very easy life and it showed when I took this one apart, no visable wear on any of it apart from a little on the piston skirts, but this could have been lubrication failure caused by all the oilways in the piston oil scraper ring and seating groove being clogged up, now rebuilt it should last another 500K miles or so.
